epa09742895 An Afghan nurse attends to newborn babies at Malalai National And Specialized Hospital catering to maternity needs of Afghan women, in Kabul, Afghanistan, 08 February 2022 (issued 10 February 2022). The Taliban government has appointed doctor Malalai Faizi as the director of a maternity hospital in Kabul in the first ever appointment of a woman as the head of a public institution under the Islamist administration. The appointment is an unprecedented moment in the Taliban's policies towards women since the Islamists seized power on Aug.15, as women had been excluded from public offices so far, apart from facing curbs on their freedom of movement and accessing high-school education as well as other jobs. The Unicef has warned that one million children in Afghanistan may die of acute malnutrition if urgent action wasn't taken. According to UN estimates, more than half of the population will be facing famine this winter, and 97 percent of the population could fall below the poverty line this year. EPA-EFE/STRINGER
